7-year-old Maisie is caught in the middle of an ugly custody battle between her bohemian, New York-dwelling parents. In a race to win the court's advantage, Beale marries Maisie's nanny Margo, prompting Suzanna in turn to marry friend and local bartender, Lincoln. As Maisie is shuttled back and forth between her parents, she comes to rely on her new step parents, who begin to see how selfish and damaged Maisie's parents are.
